How to be prepared for bush fire season

The recent warm conditions mean the bush fire season is already upon us. The best way to minimise the threat of fires to your business and your staff is to be as prepared as possible. The Rural Fire Service (RFS) provides up to date information on how best to monitor the situation in your local area. Our advice to organisations is to consider the following:

ACT NOW – Planning is key.

  • Prepare evacuation survival kits
  • Make sure all evacuation diagrams are up to date and displayed correctly
  • Prepare an evacuation plan that includes how to leave, where to go, how to communicate with everyone in the building
  • Ensure relevant staff have undertaken Warden or Chief Warden training, test your procedures and hold evacuation drills
  • Maintain your premises – remove fuel from your buildings, keep clear gutters and remove dead trees or foliage from close by
  • Monitor rural fire websites for further updates

WHEN A FIRE APPROACHES

  • Initiate your emergency plans as soon as possible
  • Make a decision early on whether to evacuate your building
  • Monitor the radio for announcements relating to your local area

Emergency Management Plans protect your organisation and the people within it. Bush fires are inevitable in Australia and affect almost everyone at some point. Information and organsation are the two key factors in preventing loss of assets and the threat to people’s lives.
